After a huge span of time I thought I would give Last Tango in Paris another view. It was many years ago when I first watched it and I thought with the passage of time I might be more able to understand what the film was about. If your first criteria for a film is it’s entertainment value, Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider having a lot of sex onscreen might do it for you. I read recently that Maria felt that as a young 20 year old making this film that she had been taken advantage of and ever after refused to take her clothes off for a role. The film at second viewing seems totally indulgent and that the director just did whatever he felt like at the time, message by damned, The cinematography is totally beautiful with the blend of colors and the shots of Paris, that alone makes it worthwhile to view. Brando is just starting to go to seed but he maintains his noble bearing and beautiful profile. Maria as the girl is hot, hot, hot. There is a certain sadness watching her as the knowledge that in real life she dies young and does not really have a huge career colors your feelings about her character somewhat. I wonder if Brando ever sat up on his spread on Mulholland Dr. in lonely splender with his kids and thought, I think I will watch ‘Last Tango in Paris, that sure was fun to make. My guess is: no, he did not, but who am I to guess? In one scene in the apartment where they met to have sex the background music is suddenly hawaiian I enjoyed that touch. They switch back and forth between French and English, ok. Towards the end of the film all of a sudden Brando’s character turns republican businessman and lets forth with speeches about what the movie might have been about and wants to get serious with the girl, but she flees in terror. Good Plan.
